A popular pastime throughout Europe, outdoor chess on giant boards is enjoyed daily along the Barenplatz, a popular plaza located across from the Swiss House of Parliament in the Old City of Bern, Switzerland. Founded in the 12th century, Bern is located on the Aare River and is the capital of Switzerland and gateway to the Alps. The entire city of Bern is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This popular square is the site of Bern’s traditional weekly market, cultural events, political rallies, public gatherings, and is one of Switzerland’s the many giant outdoor chessboards.
