Père Lachaise Cemetery: Paris, France
Established on the northeast periphery of Paris on May 21, 1804, the same week as 35-year-old Napoleon Bonaparte became Emperor of France, Père Lachaise was Europe’s first modern cemetery and it became the forerunner of all future picturesque garden cemeteries in the Western world including Mount Auburn Cemetery outside of Boston, Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, and Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Interments at Père Lachaise were initially unpopular. To encourage people to purchase plots on the property, administrators for the cemetery came up with the idea of transferring the remains of notable people such as Moliere, Abelard and Heloise, and Jean La Fontaine from other cemeteries to Père Lachaise. Within the next few years, Père-Lachaise went from containing a few dozen permanent residents to boasting more than 33,000 by 1830. Currently Père-Lachaise consists of 110 acres, 97 divisions separated by tree-lined cobblestone walkways. It is also the final resting place of over one million people and is visited by over 3 million people annually.
